Not exactly a hybrid question, but a general interest story for another car using alternative energy...

DETROIT (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors unveiled the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle on Tuesday, allowing outsiders their first full look at the car GM says will go on sale in 2010.

"The Volt symbolizes GM's commitment to the future," said Rick Wagoner, the company's chairman and CEO.

The Volt will be driven by electricity stored in a large T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack running the length of the car. After charging for several hours, the Volt will be able to run for up to about 40 miles without using gasoline.

GM did not announce pricing for the car, which will have the equivalent of about 150 horsepower and a top speed of 100 mph, the automaker said.

To charge the batteries, drivers will plug a cord into one of the ports just ahead of the driver's side mirror. The cord can then be attached to an ordinary home electrical outlet.

The car will cost "less than purchasing a cup of your favorite coffee" to recharge, and use less electricity annually than a refrigerator. The Volt should cost less than 2 cents per mile to drive on electricity, GM said, compared to 12 cents a mile on gasoline at a price of $3.60 a gallon.

As the battery begins to run down as the car is in use, a small gasoline engine will turn on and generate enough electricity to drive the car about 300 miles.

The car's zero-to-sixty time will be under nine seconds, said GM vehicle line director Tony Posawatz. That would make the performance about average for a modern car.

"The center of gravity of the car, with the center battery pack, it's going to have real great ride and handling," said Posawatz.

Disappointed fans
Unlike hybrid cars, or plug-in hybrids, the Volt is driven only be electricity. The gasoline engine never directly drives the car's wheels.

Based on photos released last week - inadvertently, GM says - many people posting comments on car blogs have expressed disappointment that the production car does not look as angular and aggressive as the original concept vehicle.

"The majority of [the comments] are negative," Lyle Dennis, a New Jersey neurologist who runs the blog GM-Volt.com, said last week. "A lot of people are saying they're very disappointed and 'take me off the [waiting] list.' "

2011 Chevrolet VoltGM regularly uses the Volt concept car, introduced at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, in its advertising, identifying it as "future product."

That concept car's angular face wasn't aerodynamically efficient enough to make it to the final version as GM engineers and designers tried to extract every extra foot of "all electric" range from the car, GM designers have said.

The Volt will seat four, not five as some other cars its size can, according to GM. The space required by the battery pack would not allow for a center seating position in the back.

The interior has a futuristic design, but it maintains the twin-cockpit look derived from the classic Corvette sports car, which has become a trademark design in recent Chevrolet cars.

The gear selector, when pushed forward into the "Park" position, sits in an opening in the car's dashboard creating a smooth appearance. Once the car is turned on, it can be pulled back to "Drive."

The Volt's battery pack goes where the "transmission tunnel" would be in a conventional rear-wheel- drive car. That means the batteries don't take up cargo space as they do in some hybrid cars. Unlike its smoothly rounded front, the back end of the car has a sharp, angular shape. In the rear, where air flows together as it trails off from the vehicle, sharp angles help smooth air flow.

A wing incorporated into the trailing edge of the roof also helps to smooth airflow helping fuel economy.

Keeping it simple
Beyond its advanced electric drive system, the Volt isn't particularly high-tech. Engineers and designers wanted to keep the experience as familiar to drivers as possible. Besides, lots of electronic gadgetry inside the car would have used electric power needed to offer the maximum gasoline-free driving range.

The Volt will have a central display screen - similar to one in a Toyota Prius hybrid - that will show how the car is using electric power, when the batteries are being charged and whether the gasoline engine is turned on.

GM is also planning to roll out another plug-in vehicle in 2009, the Saturn Vue Plug-in Hybrid SUV. That vehicle will be a standard hybrid vehicle, meaning that both gasoline and electric power will move the wheels.

Other companies, including Toyota and Nissan, have also announced plans to have plug-in cars of some type on the market by 2010. So far, the Volt is the only one of its type, running on electricity only but with on-board power generating capability.

Ford Motor Co. has exhibited a vehicle with a drive system similar to the Volt's and has allowed journalists to drive the vehicle. But Ford has not announced any plans to produce such a vehicle for consumers, citing the high price of battery technology.

This first-generation Chevy Volt is expected to be fairly expensive, Posawatz conceded. (Some reports have put the price at $40,000.) But GM is not looking to make much money, if any, on the car, he said.

GM is expecting to produce at least 10,000 Volts in the car's first year and higher numbers after that, he said.

TORRANCE, Calif. August 1, 2008; Toyota is adding a five-door Liftback, to its popular, fuel-efficient Yaris subcompact model line for 2009.

The versatile new five-door Yaris joins the three-door Liftback and four-door Sedan, making Yaris the only model line in its segment to offer a full complement of three body styles. Toyota projects 130,000 Yaris sales for calendar year 2009, with the new five-door accounting for about a third of those. Yaris five-door will begin arriving in dealerships in August.

Also new for 2009, all Yaris models feature as standard equipment an anti-lock brake system (ABS), front seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear curtain side airbags. Cruise control is now available on Liftback models, and audio systems are satellite ready/capable. Yaris delivers outstanding fuel economy and for 2008 was awarded the lowest cost of ownership in its segment according to Intellichoice®.

The Toyota Yaris brings a high level of balanced value, safety and a fun-to-drive experience to the entry subcompact segment. Its 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine is equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and produces 106 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 103 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 RPM. The optional four-speed automatic transmission features uphill/downhill shift logic to reduce gear "hunting" for smooth performance when driving in hills. A five-speed manual is the standard transmission.

The Yaris Sedan rides on a 100.4-inch wheelbase versus 96.9 inches for both Liftback models. The Yaris Sedan has an overall length of 169.3 inches compared to 150.6 inches for the Liftback models, and the Sedan is 2.5 inches lower than the Liftbacks, as well.

The Yaris is built around a highly rigid yet lightweight structure incorporating strategic use of high-tensile steel. Damping materials strategically located throughout the body structure reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) to help give Yaris a comfortable, quiet ride. Suspension and steering are tuned to deliver responsive handling, a smooth ride and excellent maneuverability, including a remarkably tight 32.6-ft. turning radius. Both the Yaris Liftback and Sedan ride on standard P175/65 R14 tires with steel wheels and full wheel covers (Sedan and Liftback S have standard P185/60R15) and offer available newly-styled 15-inch steel or aluminum-alloy wheels.

The instrument cluster is center-mounted and high on the dash to enhance forward visibility. Generous standard convenience features on Yaris Liftback and Sedan models include air conditioning; tilt steering wheel; digital clock; a map light; intermittent windshield wipers with mist control; and dual sunvisors with vanity mirrors. All models offer 60/40 split rear seating for three with headrests in each seating position.

Sporty S models have a newly designed front and rear underbody spoiler and a new interior color scheme distinguishes Yaris Sport models for 2009. The sport-themed Liftback and Sedan S models feature color-keyed front and rear under-bumper spoilers, sporty interior trim, rear deck spoiler, fog lamps, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, AM/FM/CD player with MP3/WMA capability, satellite ready, integrated iPod audio unit, universal mini-jack port and "S" badging. Aluminum-alloy wheels are available.

Pricing for the all-new five-door model will be announced later this month.

Drivers feeling the pinch of high gas prices may want to consider the Toyota Corolla. The compact sedan travelled an astonishing 1,017 kilometres on a single 50-litre gas tank during a challenge pitting it against a dozen other similar vehicles.

Online magazine CanadianDriver and TV's Motoring 2008 test-drove 13 compact sedans and hatchbacks (all in the $20,000 price range) to find out which one would go the farthest with 50-litres in the gas tank. Motoring 2008 producer Brad Diamond says organizers of the "50-litre challenge" were surprised just how far some of the cars were able to go.

"The Toyota Corolla went the longest. We were driving for over 19 hours," Diamond told CTV's Canada AM on Monday.

Diamond said drivers were surprised how far the car travelled -- even after the gas light lit up.

"When the reserve light comes on, normally (drivers) panic," he said.

"After the light went on, the Corolla went for 188 kilometres ... they were just (driving) on fumes. It blew all of us away."

Diamond noted, however, he recommends that drivers fuel up their cars "immediately" after the gas light goes on.

Here is the list of how far each car travelled on a 50-litre tank of gas:

Toyota Corolla: 1017 km
Honda Civic: 947 km
Pontiac Vibe: 854 km
Hyundai Elantra: 812 km
Mazda3: 784 km
Pontiac G5: 755 km
Mitsubishi Lancer: 754 km
Ford Focus: 742 km
Kia Spectra: 742 km
Nissan Sentra: 717 km
Volkswagen City Golf: 670 km
Dodge Caliber: 653 km
Suzuki SX4: 637 km

Diamond said the 50-km challenge was conducted on a looped course that took drivers through roads in Ontario and Quebec. He said challenge organizers tried to emulate real-world driving conditions.

"We went through Algonquin Provincial Park, we passed each other, we changed drivers every 100 kilometres for a weight point of view," Diamond said, adding that drivers even "broke for chipmunks" on the road.

He noted that the road test proves consumers can get "sexy, small" cars that are affordable and fuel efficient.

"Not only that they're good looking cars. They're not econo-boxes anymore ... they were comfortable," he said.

Under Toyota Motor Corp.'s latest drive to make its famous lean production even leaner, it has also achieved a breakthrough in technology for painting vehicles, a senior executive said recently.

The multistep paint job, which includes pretreatment, several coatings, drying and sealing, takes up 24 percent of energy use in manufacturing, according to Toyota.

Takeshi Uchiyamada, the executive overseeing production, said the new method called "3-Wet" dropped one "drying oven" step from the previous three.

The elimination in the multistep process was able to reduce by 15 percent the energy needs compared to old-style painting.

"Our production has grown over the last decade so much the energy required to manufacture each and every vehicle has also grown considerable overall," Uchiyamada told The Associated Press recently.

Ford Motor Co. has said it has developed similar ecological painting technology.

Uchiyamada said other energy-reducing innovations in manufacturing, such as shaping parts more speedily and introducing smaller robots, are also being tested at Toyota.

"We are making hybrids, plug-ins, vehicles that are friendly to the environment. That means we have to remain friendly to the environment in manufacturing them," he said.

The abbreviated paint job can't be used for Lexus luxury models, which boast multiple finishes.

Toyota already has other measures to be green. The solar panels at its Tsutsumi plant add up in size to the equivalent of 60 tennis courts, producing enough electricity to power 500 homes. That reduces 740 tons a year of carbon dioxide emissions, or equal to 1,500 barrels of crude, according to Toyota.

Toyota also uses simple toylike measures to slash energy needs -- scooting along parts with pulleys and springs, tapping into excess energy from nearby machinery, reusing grease and other shop-floor ideas to scrimp and save.

Yasuaki Iwamoto, analyst at Okasan Securities, said efficient production was a plus both as cost cuts and an image boost.

"It makes sense to grow fuel-efficient, and getting exposure is good for company image," he said.

July 15 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp., the world's second-largest automaker, may invest as much as $700 million to build a new plant in Brazil, the country's trade minister said.

Shozo Hasebe, Toyota chief executive for the Mercosur region, told Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva that production should begin in 2011, Trade Minister Miguel Jorge said yesterday after meeting with Hasebe and Lula in Brasilia.

Adding a plant would help Toyota expand its footprint in Brazil, Latin America's largest economy. Construction would start in 2009, and the plant would build a new compact-car model and have capacity of 150,000 vehicles a year, Jorge said. Toyota ranks eighth in sales in Brazil.

``From what I know of the industry, the investments shouldn't be less than $600 million or $700 million,'' said Jorge, a former Volkswagen AG executive. He told reporters that Hasebe didn't disclose how much Toyota would spend at the site in Sorocaba, about 90 kilometers (56 miles) from Sao Paulo.

The automaker will hire about 2,500 workers for the plant initially, Toyota said in a statement.

Toyota now makes Corollas in Indaiatuba, 90 kilometers from Sao Paulo, and parts in Sao Bernardo do Campo, just outside Sao Paulo, according to the automaker's Web site.

Brazil sales for the Toyota City, Japan-based company totaled 4,336 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in June. Top-ranked Fiat SpA, with 26.4 percent of the market, sold 53,118 vehicles in the same period, according to the National Vehicle Manufacturer's Association, known as Anfavea.

This year marked five decades of Toyota production in Brazil, according to the company's Web site. There are currently 122 Toyota dealerships in the country.

Toyota planned to spend ``tens of billions of yen'' to build a factory producing as many as 200,000 1-liter sedans and hatchbacks, Tokyo Shimbun newspaper reported May 14, without saying where it obtained the information. Spokesman Hiromi Hirooka said the same day Toyota planned to add a plant in an emerging market to produce a low-cost compact car.

TORRANCE, Calif., July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. currently offers integrated Bluetooth® hands-free wireless systems in 15 models and will make it available on the all-new 2009 Venza when it goes on sale this fall.
With more states enacting laws that prohibit driving while talking on handheld cell phones, the Bluetooth® hands-free systems connection between certain Toyota models and most Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phones provide an easy wireless solution. Built into optional Toyota onboard DVD navigation and JBL audio systems, the technology provides users with convenient hands-free phone capabilities.

Bluetooth® hands-free systems are available on Toyota RAV4, Corolla and Matrix models with a JBL audio unit. The system is also available on Toyota 4Runner, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Sienna, Tundra, Avalon, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and Solara models with the JBL audio unit or DVD navigation system.

The available DVD navigation and JBL audio systems enable the driver to make and receive hands-free phone calls on most compatible Bluetooth® equipped cell phones via the vehicle's built in microphone and speakers. There is no need to connect any interface cables between the phone and the vehicle. Owners simply need to register the phone by "pairing" to the system.

Due to differences in the quality of various handsets and Bluetooth® chip programming, phone functionality levels may differ by cell phone. The customer typically can enjoy the following Bluetooth® hands-free benefits on Toyota models:

-- Integrated phone operation utilizes built-in microphone and audio speakers.

-- One touch call answering via the steering-wheel control or the navigation screen.

-- Automatic audio mute when receiving or making a call.

-- Place a call from an outgoing or the incoming call log (up to five most recent calls -- on DVD navigation system only).

-- Voice command functions also allow the driver to make or receive calls.

Japanese auto giant Toyota said Thursday that it plans to start assembling its fuel-sipping Prius hybrid car in the United States with production slated to begin in late 2010.

Toyota announced plans to start US production of its gasoline and electric powered hybrid car as rival US auto firms like General Motors, Ford and Chrysler suffer sharp sales declines for gas-guzzling trucks, pickups and sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

"Prius, which will join the Kentucky-built Camry Hybrid as the second Toyota hybrid built in North America, enables Toyota to better respond to increased consumer demand for hybrid vehicles," Toyota said.

US consumer demand for hybrids and more fuel-efficient vehicles has increased in the past year as world oil prices have spiked dramatically. The surge in oil prices has stoked gasoline prices, making Americans more wary of the cost of the fuel they pump into their vehicles.

A new Prius can run to around 48 miles (77 kilometers) per gallon of fuel in city traffic compared to a large SUV which may run to 13 miles (21 kilometers) a gallon depending on how each vehicle is driven.

Such fuel economy can cut hundreds of dollars off an annual fuel bill for Prius drivers.

Proud owners who post messages on websites like "the Prius owners group" boast about the car's fuel economy, and of how they take long highway trips without worrying about their gasoline bills.

Toyota said it planned to start producing the Prius at an assembly plant presently under construction in Blue Springs, Mississippi. The first US-produced Prius cars are due to roll off the assembly lines in two years time.

Prius sales in the United States have been boosted by tax credits for fuel-efficient vehicles.

And some US states allow Prius drivers to zip along restricted carpool lanes, normally reserved for cars carrying several passengers, on busy highways even if they are carrying no other passengers.

Toyota reported 11,765 Prius sales in June, marking a 25 percent drop from a year earlier, but it said limited production volumes had skewed its sale numbers. The car sells for around 21,000 dollars.

The global auto giant is building new plants, the company is constructing another plant in Ontario, Canada, as rival US automakers close plants and cut back assembly operations.

GM announced plans last month to shut four North American truck and SUV plants. The US auto group is meanwhile ramping up production of its own lineup of fuel-efficient vehicles.

Toyota's growing heft was underlined during the first three months of this year when it overtook GM as the world's biggest vehicle maker, although GM executives remain confident they will retain the top spot for the year.

Toyota has not been able to fully insulate itself from the downturn in large vehicle sales hitting the US auto market, the world's largest.

The company also said Thursday that it would temporarily suspend production of its Tundra pickup truck and Sequoia SUV beginning August 8. Production is due to resume in November.

Toyota said affected workers would continue to be provided work.

"By using this downturn as an opportunity to develop team members and improve our operations, we hope to emerge even stronger," Toyota vice president Jim Wiseman said.

Toyota is moving to consolidate production of the Tundra pickup truck to its San Antonio plant in Texas by next year and plans to halt assembly of the pickup at an Indiana plant.

In a further production update, Toyota said it would now build the Highlander mid-size SUV, originally scheduled to be built in Mississippi, at its Princeton, Indiana plant.

Toyota's North American footprint presently consists of 13 manufacturing plants and over 43,000 employees.
